WHY SOLAR PANEL EFFICIENCY MEANS
ALMOST NOTHING WHILE INVERTER EFFICIENCY MATTERS
MOST.
When selecting a solar panel for your installation, you may hear
solar panel manufacturers boast about their panel's efficiency as if though
you'll somehow get more power with their higher efficiency solar panel.
Unfortunately for the most part that's not true. A 240 watt solar panel with a
lower efficiency rating produces the same amount of power as a 240 watt solar
panel with a higher efficiency rating.
The only real difference between the two panels is that a higher
efficiency 240 watt solar panel will have slightly smaller physical dimensions
than the 240 watt lower efficiency solar panel. So in most cases, paying a
premium for a higher efficiency solar panel is simply not worth the investment.
Inverter efficiency on the other hand, is a whole other story.
Rather than higher efficiency solar panels, you should be spending your money on
the highest efficiency inverter that you can afford. Inverter efficiency is directly related to energy production. The higher the
inverter's efficiency, the more power is converted from DC into AC. And every percentage point matters.
Here's an example: Let's say you are converting 6,000
watts of PV production per hour from DC into AC. A 1.5% lower inverter
efficiency rating when applied to 6,000 watts is 90 watts per hour or 450 watt
hours with 5 hours of peak sunshine per day.
Let's say you only have (300) five hour days of peak sunshine per
year. That's 300 times 450 watt hours which equals 135,000 watt hours or 135
kilowatt hours of power lost per year.
Multiply 135,000 times 25 years of production if you continued to
use a 1.5% lower efficiency inverter and you will have lost, 3,375,000 watt
hours of power.
